The Biewer (pronounced "beaver," like the well-known dam-building rodent) is officially called the "Biewer Yorkshire Terrier." It's a variation on the popular Yorkshire Terrier that has already melted so many children's hearts. The Biewer is "a big dog in a compact body." It's a companion dog whose sole purpose in life is to love and be loved. Their charming, whimsical attitude, with a touch of jealousy and possessiveness toward other pets, makes them incredibly adorable. Their spirited exuberance toward other, often larger, dogs is also very typical.
Biewers are loving and incredibly devoted to their owners. These intelligent dogs are generally very obedient, but can also be mischievous and a bit stubborn at times. They can be aloof and wary, which means they won't rush up to any stranger with a wagging tail. However, these loyal dogs aren't exactly guard dogs. They will always provide plenty of entertainment for your family. However, these tireless sweethearts will never bark excessively. Biewers need to know who's in charge, but consistent and positive reinforcement usually pays off.
Appearance
A Biewer Yorkshire Terrier is an elegant, long-haired, tricolored small terrier. This breed is characterized by its high-set, curved "ponytail" with a long, luxurious plume. Its unique, silky coat has distinctive colors that distinguish it from the "regular" Yorkshire Terrier. The hairs fall evenly down the center on both sides of the body, almost as if a comb were used to part them perfectly straight. Therefore, their coat does require some extra attention.
A Biewer may be small in stature, but that doesn't make them any less sturdy or athletic. They reach a maximum length of 23 cm and usually weigh between 2.5 and 3.5 kg. On average, these dogs are 22 cm tall and weigh around 3.1 kg.

Biewer Yorkies make excellent apartment dwellers because they're compact, don't cause noise pollution, and don't require a lot of exercise. Sometimes, for example, in bad weather, a short walk in the hallway is sufficient. However, these playful playmates can also give their all during long walks, hikes, or agility training. Biewers do enjoy activities and the occasional challenge. They do get bored easily.
These "beaver Yorkies" do require a low-protein, well-balanced diet. Crumbled food is a good idea to reduce the rapid buildup of plaque. Their teeth should be brushed regularly anyway. Good ear and eye hygiene is also important. Biewers who often scratch themselves or chew their paw pads benefit from a diet based on lamb and fish. Like Yorkshire Terriers, Biewers are prone to weight gain. Provide them with clean, fresh water regularly and spread their food over two to three meals a day. As with other Yorkshire Terriers, you should be careful with anesthesia. These dogs can also suffer from allergies.
The Biewer's long coat is prone to matting and requires daily grooming. It's important to maintain their coat and clean their ears regularly. Regular nail trimming is also essential to prevent cracking, splitting, and overgrowth. This breed also requires good-quality grooming products. They also need extra protection from cold and hot temperatures. Biewers are easy to train as long as you're consistent. Don't over-indulge them. Potty training can take a little longer with this breed. Keep them happy and healthy, and this cheerful playmate can live for 12 to 15 years.
