Chihuahua
Character
A Chihuahua is sometimes mockingly called a lap dog. And indeed, it's a true companion animal that loves to be with its owner as much as possible. Chihuahuas may be small, but they often have a big personality. They are typically playful, attentive, and intelligent. But they can also be a bit headstrong.
Yet, that doesn't stop them from forming close relationships with other dogs and children. As long as children respect them and don't tease them, the Chihuahua gets along just fine! Chihuahuas are also known for their temperament, though they all have very unique personalities. Despite their small stature, they make excellent watchdogs. They're wary of strangers and can be quite noisy when they want to be.
Appearance
The Chihuahua is the smallest dog breed in the world. So these dogs are easily recognizable. They weigh between just 500 and 3000 grams. There are short-haired and long-haired Chihuahuas. The coat of a short-haired Chihuahua is smooth and shiny, while the long-haired is somewhat softer and finer. The hair of this adorable darling is typically a bit longer around the "breeches" and tail, around the ruff, and on the ears. Coat colors vary greatly within this breed.
Other details
Long-haired Chihuahuas need to be brushed several times a week. Short-haired ones require less care. For these, occasional brushing is sufficient. You should bathe a Chihuahua monthly with a mild dog shampoo, but be careful not to get water in their ears. Dental hygiene is also very important for this breed. Finally, you should protect them from the cold when taking them for walks. This small, spirited dog is ideal for an apartment or condo. The average lifespan is 13 to 14 years, but they can live up to 18 years.
