Labrador

Character

The Labrador Retriever is the perfect family dog. It's a friendly breed: intelligent, youthful, and sociable. These athletic family dogs love walking and playing and, as their name suggests, enjoy retrieving objects. The puppies are easy to train. They learn quickly and don't forget easily. That's why they're often used as guide dogs for the blind.

Appearance

There are two types of Labrador Retrievers: an American and an English variety. The former is longer and leaner, the latter slightly stiffer and heavier. Labradors have a round head with friendly brown or black eyes and a straight muzzle. They have drooping ears that are set close to their heads. The Labrador's cheerful "otter tail" is medium-long and thick. Their short coat is dense, straight, and hard with a weather-resistant undercoat. The coat color varies between creamy white, blond, liver, fox red, chocolate brown, and black. Sometimes they have a small white spot on their chest. Labrador Retrievers weigh an average of 35 kg (77 lbs) and grow to a height of about 56 cm (22 in).

Other details

The Labrador is not originally from Labrador, Canada, as is often thought, but from Newfoundland, off the coast of Labrador. It was a perfect companion for fishermen, helping to haul ropes and fish. From there, it was imported to England. The Portuguese word "lavrador" means "laborer." The modern Labrador is a pampered family dog, used in dog sports, or as a retriever for hunters. It is also sometimes used as an assistance dog for the disabled, a show dog, or a rescue dog. It certainly enjoys a variety of jobs.

Labradors shed quite a bit, especially during shedding season. Weekly brushing is sufficient and removes much of the loose hair. The Lab has been the number one dog in America for years. However, they do demand quite a bit of your energy. Labrador Retrievers need at least half an hour to an hour of exercise a day. Without that outlet, they can start nibbling things to pieces or barking out of boredom. They are also true escape artists, so they need a sturdy fence. If they get enough exercise, you can also keep them in an apartment. Labs tend to become obese if you don't measure their food accurately. They also love human food and completely inedible things. Make sure they can't dig in the garbage. A Labrador typically lives for 12 to 13 years.
