Lagotto romagnolo / Italian water dog

Character

The Lagotto Romagnolo, also known as the Vallaroli or Italian Water Dog, originates from Romagna in Italy. It is one of the oldest and most famous Italian water dogs. They were initially used primarily to hunt waterfowl, specifically moorhens. Because of their exceptional sense of smell, they were also sometimes employed to search for truffles. In Sweden, this breed is also frequently seen working as a drug detection dog in customs.

These friendly dogs are smart, lively, and devoted. Their friendly, alert, and even-tempered nature generally makes them great friends with children. While they are friendly to new people, they can be a bit reserved. This also applies to new experiences. The Lagotto Romagnolo is a true creature of habit. Therefore, it helps to introduce this dog to the customs of your household from an early age. Because they are affectionate and docile, Lagottos are easy to train. They love the company of their family members.

Appearance

A Lagotto Romagnolo is a sturdy but light, muscular small to medium-sized breed. On average, males reach a height of 43 to 50 cm at the withers, and females 40 to 46 cm. Males typically weigh between 13 and 16 kg, while females weigh slightly less: between 11 and 16 kg.

The Romagna Water Dog is a broad-based dog with a rounded skull, a square body, well-sprung ribs, and oval feet. A striking feature of this breed is its short, thick, woolly, curly coat. It resembles a sheepskin. This water-resistant coat grows incredibly quickly, up to 1 cm per month. Coat colors vary from solid off-white to white with brown or reddish-brown patches or markings. Solid (reddish-brown) also occurs, sometimes with white markings or a roan pattern.

Other details

A Lagotto Romagnolo is fast and agile, with a keen sense of scent. This makes it an ideal candidate for agility competitions and dog sports. It's also a true water retriever. It loves swimming, playing in the mud, or trotting through puddles and streams. It's also intelligent and eager to learn.

This hard-working dog is eager to please its owner and gets along well with other pets. It's also the ideal dog for long walks. The Lagotto's coat does require some maintenance. This dog doesn't shed, which is good news for people with dog hair allergies. However, weekly brushing and regular detangling are essential. It's also advisable to clip or shave this dog four times a year to prevent excessive tangles, as tangles can attract vermin. You can also get these dogs used to having you clip or trim them. This creates a stronger bond with your pet. A monthly bath can help keep this four-legged friend's coat clean without compromising its water-repellent properties. It's also important to regularly remove hair from their ears.

Romagna water dogs require loving guidance and patient encouragement in their training. They need plenty of exercise and also enjoy being pampered. On average, these dogs live 12 to 15 years.
