Samoyed
Character
The Samoyed is a small Russian breed originating from Northern Siberia. Originally bred in Northwest Asia and Northeastern Europe as guard dogs and for herding reindeer herds, they also proved suitable as sled dogs in Alaska. In Europe and the US, they primarily serve as pets and companion dogs. They also make excellent watchdogs. They lack a predatory instinct and can therefore be housed with children and other pets. Samoyeds are known for their loyal and obedient nature.
Appearance
The elegant and charming Samoyed belongs to the Arctic and Keeshond breeds. This graceful breed is long-haired and long-legged. The average height of a female is 48 to 53 cm (19 to 21 inches) and that of a male 53 to 60 cm (21 to 24 inches). Females weigh approximately 16 to 20 kg (35 to 44 pounds), and males 20 to 30 kg (44 to 66 pounds). Samoyeds have an endearing smile and a beautiful, full, white or cream-colored coat. This harsh, wiry coat is medium-length with abundant, soft undercoat. This breed has almond-shaped, dark eyes and thick, upright, triangular ears. The tail is long and heavily furred.
Other details
Samoyeds have great stamina and require a lot of variety in training. They are very obedient but not submissive. Therefore, if the exercises become very repetitive, they can become quite stubborn. A Samoyed's coat also requires some extra time and attention from its owner. It's necessary to thin the coat daily with a wide-toothed comb, without removing too much undercoat. During the shedding season, this impressive coat requires extra care to prevent tangles. It's wise to bathe the Arctic dog during this period and blow loose hairs out of the undercoat with a blower. Furthermore, pampering this dog with extensive brushing sessions will prevent excessive hair loss. The life expectancy of a Samoyed is 12 to 15 years.
