Australian Shepherd
Character
The Australian Shepherd's natural versatility makes them suitable as both a farm dog and a house companion. They are tireless and hardy in their work. Yet, they also bond strongly with their family as a protector of the house. They generally get along well with children. As alert guardians, they only bark when they sense a threat. They are exceptionally intelligent and eager to learn, making them very suitable for training.
Appearance
The male Aussie is on average about 50 to 58 cm tall. Females are generally slightly smaller, at 45 to 53 cm tall. Males also generally weigh more than females, weighing 23 to 30 kg, while females weigh between 14 and 20 kg. The striking coat of this beautiful breed comes in a variety of colors. Black, blue merle, red, and red merle are the most common. Brown or white markings can also appear on the muzzle, chest, and hind legs. Their eyes also come in various shades: blue, amber, hazel, and many other browns. There is a variant of the Australian Shepherd with a naturally shortened tail: the so-called "stumpy tail." These are also available from us.
Other details
Early socialization is important for an Australian Shepherd. This breed also requires a great deal of exercise. A short walk a day is far from enough. They prefer to be diligently working for their owner. This dog, however, requires very little maintenance. They only shed moderately twice a year. An occasional brushing with a firm bristle brush is sufficient. Bathing is not necessary unless the coat is extremely dirty due to circumstances. Their keen learning ability makes them easy to train, but they do need plenty of variety. They quickly become bored with repetitive exercises. The "Aussie" typically lives between 12 and 13 years.
