Basenji
Character
The Basenji is originally an African hunting dog with unique characteristics, known for its inability to bark. However, it does make a distinctive sound when happy: a kind of yodel-like wolf howl. It's a stable, calm, intelligent, and curious dog, yet energetic, playful, confident, and alert. Affectionate or independent? This unique breed finds a perfect balance. However, it can be rather reserved with strangers. Like a cat, the Basenji pays close attention to hygiene and grooms itself frequently. Furthermore, like a cat, it has no body odor and dislikes water.
Appearance
An elegant and lightly built Basenji seems perfectly suited to be a companion for aristocratic families. Its wrinkled forehead and tight, curly tail are also characteristic. It also has erect ears. The Basenji's short, smooth, and hard coat comes in various colors: red and white, black and white (with or without a red mask), or brindle. Its tail, chest, and feet are always white. This headstrong, feline dog's height at the withers is between 40 and 43 cm, with males usually being the largest. Its weight ranges from 9 to 11 kg.
Other details
The name "Basenji" means "forest thing." It's one of the oldest dog breeds in the world. Their appearance strongly resembles the dogs depicted by the Egyptians in ancient wall paintings. While these cat-like dogs are good at taking care of themselves, it's a good idea to brush their coat occasionally. Basenjis require an experienced owner. Training them can be challenging, but with a consistent, patient, understanding, yet determined approach, they'll succeed! They're even ideal dogs for dog racing. With proper care, Basenjis can easily live to be between 12 and 16 years old.
